DVB-T Pay TV services launched in Argentina
The first Over the air Pay TV services using the DVB-T standard in Argentina were announced during a press conference on the 21st June 2006, in Buenos Aires.
The service, which became a commercial reality in July, was launched by Antina Argentina and will initially use 10 UHF TV channels each broadcasting four services. Eventually 60 digital channels will be available.
The service is designed to reach all potential customers, especially those outside cable areas, in boats and areas where existing competition is low.

Working group formed to advise Government on digital TV standards
Argentina's communications ministry SeCom has created a working group to advise the government on which digital TV standard the nation should adopt, local La Nacin newspaper reported.
The government is expected to decide between two digital TV standard options: the ATSC standard currently used in the US and a few other countries; and Europe's DVB standard, which is used in many more.
Argentina selected the ATSC standard back in 1998 but the government later overruled the decision and it was expected that they would adopt the same system as Brazil.
The Argentine authorities now say they will decide independently, taking into account the benefits for the country such as royalties, investments expected in the country and job generation policies.

DVB-T Trial Service On Air in Argentina
The DVB Project Office has learned that Argentinian broadcaster Telefe is currently broadcasting a trial DVB-T service on Channel 10 in the Buenos Aires area. Telefe, the leading broadcaster in the Buenos Aires region in audience terms, began the trial broadcasts last month. We hope to be in a position to provide more information, including the technical parameters of the service, in the coming days.

EU's Viviane Reding in talks with Brazil and Argentina on Digital TV
EU Commissioner Viviane Reding is set to visit Brazil and Argentina with a group of executives from Nokia, Philips, ST, Siemens and DVB to persuade the governments to choose the DVB digital system for the delivery of mobile and fixed television.
The system is already used in Europe, Australia and parts of Asia as well as being the adopted system in many other countries including India and South Africa.
In November Argentina's public works ministry decided to adopt the same standard Brazil chooses, reversing the earlier decision to adopt the US ATSC system.
The Brazilian government has now brought forward the introduction of DTV to September 7th 2006 but is still to choose a system.

Argentina expected to follow Brazil's choice of a DTT system
In an article in La Prensa about the forthcoming DTT system choice in Brazil and Argentina it is reported that Argentina is likely to adopt the same system as Brazil. It reports that in November the Secretariat of Communication of the Public Work Ministry of Argentina decided to adopt the same pattern of digital TV as Brazil. This is despite an earlier decision to adopt the US ATSC system back in 1998 a system which is already discounted by Brazil. The article says that a system choice from Brazil is likely in February although other sources opt for trials in June and a full launch in September.

Digital TV reviewed
The "Day of launching digital television in Argentina" took place in the hall of the Eva Péron Palace of the Post office in Buenos Aires on the afternoon of the 30th September 2005.
The meeting, organised by the Secretariat of Communication of the national government and the Association of Terradiodifusoras Argentina (IT TIES) took place to discuss the technical, legislative and economic advantages and disadvantages of digital television.

Concrete plans and dates were not discussed but the audience of government employees, industrialists and professionals in this area of communication, heard presentations from Mario Brown Guillermo, presenting a paper from the minister of Federal Planning, Julio De Vido; Osvaldo Nemirovsci, president of the Commission of Communication and Informatica of the House of Representatives; President of TIES Carlos Fontán Balestra: Head of the Cabinet, Alberto Fernandez completed the afternoon presentations.

Digital TV returns to Argentina's Agenda
Today, the 30th September, in the Public Post Office, the launching day for Digital TV in Argentina will be carried out. The event organized by the Communications Secretary and the Asociación de Teleradiodifusoras Argentina (ATA), reflex’s the return of Digital TV to the sector’s agenda after several years with scarce advances within the service implementation. Within Carlos Menem presidency, the country had chosen the US standard ATSC for Digital TV. Afterwards, Fernando De la Rúa`s Government announced that he would repeal the American norm, decision that finally died in its intent. Within the topics, subjects as Digital TV standards, transmission experiences, production of Argentina’s private TV stations and the challenges from analogical to digital TV would be discussed, Cabinet Chief, Alberto Fernández; the Federal Planning Minister, Julio De Vido and ATA`s president, Carlos Fontán Balestra will be present.
